Beyond Marrakech – Moroccan Wedding Blankets

Married or not, I must say I am madly in love with Moroccan wedding blankets. These dreamy and exotic handcrafted textiles, known as Handiras, are woven out of wool, cotton, and linen by Berber women in Northern Morocco. So if you’re looking for the perfect Handira blanket (or even accent pillows), Beyond Marrakech is the place to buy them, especially since the owner Danielle is one of the sweetest ladies.

There is so much history and symbolism behind these blankets, which are woven in anticipation of a wedding, by the bride’s female relatives. Some blankets take weeks, while others may only take hours.  Through this task, the bride’s relatives teach her about marital duties and expectations. After the wedding ceremony the bride drapes herself in the blanket and takes it to her new home.
